Archangels Michael & Gabriel

Description
In the altar of an Orthodox Church a decorated panel called an iconostasis separates the priest and the congregation. The iconostasis depicts the archangels Michael and Gabriel, the two spirits who are closest to God and are the keepers of the holy place.

Michael and Gabriel are the messengers of God. In older icons the archangels hold a circle or sphere with the letters AXK, symbolising the Lord of the Cosmos. The artist Kolioussis believes the archangels are responsible for the harmony of the universe, and are the healers of the world.
